Privacy
Last updated October 26, 2026. In short: your slides stay on your computer unless you sign in, we only count things without names, and we never sell anything.
Your slides and notes
When you add a PDF or PowerPoint, it is read inside your own browser. Your slides, points, practice scores and settings are saved in your browser's storage on that computer. Clearing your browser data deletes them. If you sign in, they are also saved in your own account, so you can open them on another computer (see "Accounts" below).
Your voice
To turn speech into text, the app uses your browser's built-in speech recognition. In Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, this sends your audio to Google's or Microsoft's speech service while listening is on. Their privacy policies apply to that audio. Listening is only on while the amber "Listening" light shows at the top of the app, and you can pause it any time. The app never records your voice.
The "understands what you mean" AI runs entirely inside your browser. What you say is not sent anywhere for it.
The help bot
Greetings and settings changes (like "make it move on faster") are handled inside your browser. Other questions are sent, without your name, to Cloudflare's AI service, which writes the answer. Cloudflare doesn't use them to train its AI. We keep the text of questions, without any name or email, so we can see what people need help with and improve the Help page. Please don't type personal information into the bot.
Accounts
Accounts are optional. Every feature works without one. If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your name, email address and profile picture, and nothing else. Your decks, practice scores and settings are then stored in your account with Supabase, our database service, and only you can open them.
To delete your account, press your name at the top of the app, then "Delete my account". That removes your account and the decks saved in it.
Support requests
When you send a request on the Contact support page, we keep what you write, your email address, your name if you give it, and (if you leave the box ticked) your browser and screen size, so we can answer you and fix problems. They're stored with Supabase, and only the site's owner can read them. To stop spam, we also keep a scrambled code made from your internet address, which can't be turned back into the address. Want a request deleted? Ask in the request or by email.
Counting how the site is used
To see how the site is used, we count events like "the app was opened", "a PowerPoint deck was added" or "a practice run finished with a score of 82". These counts have no names, no email addresses, nothing from your slides, and no cookies, so they can't be traced back to you.
Chrome extension
The Chrome extension reads the text of the slide that's showing in Canva, Google Slides or PowerPoint Online, only after you click Start listening, and only on that tab. It keeps it on your computer and sends nothing to us. Like the app, it uses Chrome's speech service to turn your voice into text, and its AI listener runs on your computer. Its settings are kept in your Chrome.
Phone remote
When you connect your phone, your laptop and phone talk directly to each other. A free connection service (PeerJS) helps them find each other, but your slides and points go straight between your own devices.
Sharing a deck
"Share this deck" saves a file on your computer. It only goes to the people you send it to.
Services the website uses
To work for free, the website uses a few trusted services:
- Netlify hosts the website. Like any web host, it keeps short-lived technical logs such as IP addresses.
- cdnjs and jsDelivr deliver the open-source code that reads PDF and PowerPoint files, draws QR codes and runs the AI.
- Hugging Face delivers the in-browser AI model the first time you use it. After that, your browser keeps a copy.
- Google or Microsoft turn your speech into text, as described above.
- Cloudflare runs the help bot's AI, as described above.
- Supabase stores accounts, the decks of people who sign in, and the anonymous counts.
- Google handles "Continue with Google", if you choose it.
- PeerJS helps your phone and laptop find each other, only when you use the phone remote.
What we don't do
- No ads and no tracking cookies.
- We never sell or share your information.
- We never look at your slides. Even with an account, only you can open your decks.
Kids and students
Onword is made for classrooms. Students can use every feature without signing up, and nothing personal is collected unless someone chooses to sign in.
